Discussions with Waltero

You hear a lot from aristes, the men and women making waves and producing hits for us to move our feet and bob our heads to, but hardly do you ever hear from the people behind their success, the people who make things happen, the managers. This time UPNEXT got down to discuss with Walter Osawuru, the manger of two "new wave" artistes Kaylu and Timmss Obey. He gave us insight on his experience as a manager and his journey with his clients.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Walter Osawaru, I’m 18 years old, I’m a 200 level Economics students from the University of Lagos.

What do you do?

I’m an artiste manger.

As a manager, how does a typical day go for you?

A typical day for me, basically depends on what I have planned out that day. If I have classes, I go for classes. Some days I meet with clients and business associates, sometimes I go to the studio as well. I always try to contact people and make enquires myself

Take us behind the scenes on the success of your clients

Behind the scenes success, well it’s all God to be very honest and hard work. We always try to make sure that their music is good and always improving. Cuz before anything else, good music speaks for itself and my artistes always have to be in the right state of mind and have the right mentality in anything their doing. Positivity is key.

Are you always bothered with calls and messages regarding enquires every day?

Well I don’t get calls every day, it’s not every day that performances or endorsements come up but I do get contacted when I’m not I try and make enquires myself

How do you deal with all of this and school work?

Its time management basically. There’s time for everything. When there’s school work, I pay attention to it then I go back to business them vice versa.

Do you feel appreciated by your clients?

Hahaha! They had careers before I started managing them. I feel appreciated. Yes we may have disagreements sometimes, it’s normal. But my clients are also my close friends so everyone is always appreciated.

Describe your relationship with your clients

My relationship with them is great. Kaylu is a great guy, always willing to learn, so is Timmss. They are good listeners and also have the knowledge to make good decisions as well, not just from me but more experienced people around them.

Ever thought of going into music?

Well when I was in high school I thought of it, I’m actually in love with rap music and I started writing it too. But all that has gone now. New interests took over.

In what direction do you think the “new school music is headed and as a manager, how can you ensure success of your clients?

I believe there are a lot of talented musicians out there growing faster than ever. Nowadays we have social media that helps a lot too so I believe the music industry is growing rapidly. Also to ensure the success of your client, you need to understand him/her as a person

Are you looking to manage more artistes ?

For the meantime I'm not really looking to manage more artistes yet, but the right time will come for that.

Who are your favourite upcoming artistes?

I love Foresythe's music, Brainee, Nakeltbg, Abstrakt, Ebi D, 5Sley they are really good at what they do, and there are many more talented artistes that I like as well

Give us a memorable instance you've had with your clients.

Lol, one interesting instance was the radio interview Kaylu had with inspiration fm, and a tv interview as well. It was a very different feeling cuz it was the first time we did something like that. And the Kokoma video shoot as well, first video shoot I've ever been involved in. So these are the most interesting instances I've had as a manager.

Thank you Walter!
